Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies

Electrodiagnostic studies can help discover the cause of muscle weakness, spasms, pain, numbness, and other abnormal sensations. The two procedures usually used in this testing are needle electromyographic (EMG) examination and nerve conduction studies (NCS).

Prior to testing, our physiatrist will interview you to find out your medical history. This will be followed by a physical examination focused on your symptoms and signs. The testing plan of specific muscles and nerves will be determined and explained to you by the physician.

The time required to complete electrodiagnostic studies may vary but usually is about 40 to 60 minutes. There is no advance preparation for the testing and no permanent after-effects.

Management of Neck, Back, Muscle, Nerve, and Joint Injuries and Disorders

Our physiatrists can perform an initial comprehensive assessment for spine and musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. Physiatrists specialize in a whole body approach that goes beyond the resolution of symptoms to the prevention of recurrence.

A comprehensive assessment will include a detailed evaluation to explore and address your condition and situation related to the illness or injury. As appropriate, diagnostic measures and treatments will be incorporated. The breadth of physiatrists' expertise allows a complete and accurate treatment program which puts people back into fully functional lives, often more functional than before.

Pain Management and Interventional Procedures

Millions of Americans are living with chronic or acute pain which takes a physical, emotional and financial toll, that can greatly affect an individual's quality of life. Our physician will perform a comprehensive evaluation which will review your medical history and results of pertinent studies and therapies which have previously been performed.

A treatment plan will be developed, which may include medication management, diagnostic testing, physical therapy, and injections such as spine and joint injections, Botox injections, peripheral nerve blocks, and trigger point injections. If pain is not relieved by these methods, interventional pain management procedures may be considered, such as lumbar epidural steroid injections, which are used to treat nerve inflammation which can cause back or leg pain.

Medical Rehabilitation

We can also provide post-acute care with the goal of optimal restoration of functional impairment resulting from stroke, traumatic brain injury, amputation, joint replacement, cardiac surgery, spinal cord injury, and other disabling conditions.

Once a patient has overcome the acute stage of illness or injury, our physiatrist can assist to determine what best course of subsequent medical rehabilitation care is needed for the patient. The physiatrist collaborates with the patient/family, referral party and rehabilitation team to assure the most appropriate services for the patient are rendered.

Prosthesis (Artificial Limb) and Orthosis (Brace)

Prostheses, or artificial limbs, are used by people who have lost limbs or extremities due to disease or accidents. Orthoses, or braces, are used by people who require support due to disease or malformation. Our physiatrists evaluate patients for these needs, and in conjunction with the local prosthetist or orthotist who will be fabricating the device, determine the most appropriate appliance for the patient.

We follow the patient through the final fitting and thereafter as necessary to assure the prosthesis or orthosis are functional for the patient. Patients may require training by a rehabilitation therapist following the fitting. Therapy will be prescribed and monitored by our physiatrist as needed.

Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs)

Our physicians also perform Independent Medical Examinations. These are generally scheduled to assure that you receive appropriate care for your workplace injury or occupational disease, etc.

The IME will be scheduled for you by the doctor, employer or claim manager to evaluate the extent of your impairment. Specific questions are asked by the individual scheduling the exam, and these will be addressed by our physician. The report will be sent directly to the agency or individual who requested the examination.
